General

When you and your child register, you are reserving a place in Oslo Suzuki Piano for the entire school year.

Lesson dates are based on the public school semester schedule. Some dates might differ from the norm depending on my external professional engagements. Please refer to Events for details.

The lesson schedule comprises of weekly individual piano and group lessons. There will be one concert rehearsal and one concert each semester. There will be one weekend workshop per semester. All students are expected to participate in these concerts and workshops.

A tuned acoustic piano shall be available at home for the study of Suzuki Piano for the development of your child’s touch and musical sensitivity. Footstools are also recommended to encourage good posture and balance.

Listen to the CD everyday. Establish a daily routine to practice the piano together with your child at home as instructed during lessons. Remember to give your child positive and constructive feedback.

“Nurtured by Love” is required reading for parents of Suzuki students prior to starting lessons. This is to help you gain a deeper understanding of the Suzuki philosophy, which is the foundation for the Suzuki Method.

Membership in the Norsk Suzukiforbund (NSF) is obligatory for all students of the Suzuki Method. The annual fee for families is 300kr and will be invoiced together with the semester fees.

Individual Lessons

Please arrive for your child's lesson a little earlier so that there is time to settle, wash their hands, and observe another student's lesson before their own. Parents, observing students and siblings are requested to enter the studio quietly and to remain in the piano studio and not wander around the rest of the premises while waiting for their lessons. Please do not bring any food or drinks into the studio.

One parent is expected to be in attendance with their child during lessons at all times to observe and take notes on how to help his/her child to daily practice successfully at home. Please only use electronic mobile devices for silent note-taking and video-recording purposes. You are also encouraged to stay longer, if possible, to observe the next student's lesson.

If anything special (be it positive or negative) has happened during the week, I would appreciate that you let me know (a quick text message before the lesson is very helpful) so that I can understand if your child is under-prepared for lessons.

It is of utmost importance to me that you do not criticise or correct your child in front of me or interrupt the lesson. If there is anything you need to discuss with me, I am happy to arrange a time for that.

Siblings are welcome to observe ongoing lessons as long as they are not disruptive. You will need to supply your own quiet activity material while your other child is having a lesson.

Please do not bring your child’s friends along to these lessons if they are unaccompanied by their parents. This is to optimise the music studio environment for every child’s lessons.

Group Lessons

Remember to bring your Music Mind Games Puppy Packet to every lesson.

Please set a good example to your child by not chatting to other parents during group lessons, and this will help them focus and concentrate better. If their younger siblings are too restless and distracting, please bring them out of the studio until they are calm again. You may be asked to participate in the group lesson.

Suzuki Parent Introductory Course
All parents are required to attend a mandatory Suzuki Parent Introductory Course with me prior to their child commencing with lessons. The course introduces the Suzuki philosophy and prepares you to be able to help your child practice successfully at home daily. I am happy to accommodate requests for additional practical sessions for parents.

Observation sessions form part of the Introductory Course for Suzuki Parents.

Master Classes & Workshops

All students are encouraged to participate in Suzuki piano recitals, master classes, workshops and conferences where possible. The fees for these external master classes, workshops, and guest recitals are charged separately by organizer.

Adult Learners

Lesson blocks can be purchased in advance in 5 or 10 hour blocks (kr 3.500,- for 5 hours or kr 7.000,- for 10 hours). There is no refund for cancellation of lessons. Lessons must be rescheduled at least 48 hours ahead of the agreed appointment. Zoom lessons are an alternative if you have to stay home. The validity of purchased time blocks is 1 year from the date of purchase.

Lesson Cancellation Policy

In the event that I have to cancel any lessons, a substitute teacher via Zoom or a new date will be provided for make-up lessons at no extra cost. If I am unable to provide make-up lessons due to circumstances beyond my control, I will credit your next semester’s fee payment.

Due to my studio’s full enrollment, there will not be any refunds or make-up lessons for students who miss lessons for any reason. The weekly lesson time is dedicated exclusively to your child and is no good to anyone else. I may make exceptions for extenuating circumstances, but this will solely be at my discretion.

Instead of missing and forfeiting your child’s lesson, you can try to swap time slots directly with other families. Please check your lesson schedule to make sure that the lesson being swapped is of the same time length. When both families have confirmed the swap, please inform me of the arrangement before the lesson so that I can plan accordingly.

If your child is unwell, please do not bring your child to the lesson. It is important that the studio's community is not exposed unnecessarily to your child's illness. If your child is too sick to attend school, it means your child should not come to the lesson. A child who is unwell will not be alert enough to have a productive lesson. Oslo Suzuki Piano now also offers Zoom lessons as an alternative to have lessons from home if you or your child have to stay home.

If your child is unable to attend lessons for any other reason, please extend me the courtesy of informing me at least one day in advance if possible.

Summer Practice and Lessons

It is important to keep practicing during summer holidays so that the start of the new school term will be smoother with better retained skills. It is also the best time to advance with the Suzuki repertoire when the student has more leisure time. Contact me to arrange for any number of sessions you would like during the summer holiday weeks that I am in Oslo. The fees for summer lessons will be invoiced separately.

Renewal

Renewal for the following school year will be done automatically unless notice of intent to terminate is given no later than 30th June.

Termination

Withdrawal from Oslo Suzuki Piano at any other time must be in writing, with at least one (1) month’s notice in advance. There will be no refunds for terminations during the semester.

Observation Session

If you would like to get an idea of how Suzuki piano lessons are conducted, please contact the studio to arrange for a free observation session together with your child. It is recommended that you set aside at least 1.5 hours for this session. The purpose of the lesson observation is for you to see what I expect, what I’m like and for me to assess student readiness for my program.

If you wish to enroll your child for piano lessons at Oslo Suzuki Piano, the online registration link will be sent to you after your observation session.
